After care Advice
Remove your dressing
1–2 hours after your tattoo sitting after washing your hands. Do not keep it wrapped during the healing process, as this can introduce sweat into the tattoo. If you must keep it wrapped due to a dirty work environment, make sure to change the dressing regularly whilst following your aftercare steps.
Wash
your new tattoo gently by hand using luke warm water, using no scented soaps or washes.
Dry
by gently patting down with disposable kitchen towels. Do not use bathroom or hand towels, as these harbour bacteria.
Apply
a small amount of aftercare to your new tattoo — only a thin layer so the skin can breathe. Take care not to over-apply, as this will suffocate it. You will be provided with a sachet of Vitamins A&D ointment along with this leaflet, to be used until you obtain one of the following recommended aftercares.
Recommended aftercares:
Tattoo Goo, Hustle Butter, Yaya, Butterlux, Bepanthen-Tattoo, Vitamins A&D Ointment.
Do not use:
Bepanthen, Vaseline, Savlon, Sudocrem, Sanex, or fragranced moisturisers or lotions. These will trap bacteria on the surface of the tattoo, can cause it to dry out, scab and crack, which can also introduce bacteria into the tattoo and will hinder the healing process.
Repeat
this process — wash, dry, apply your aftercare — 3 times a day for 1 week. After this period, you can stop washing and just apply your aftercare to keep it supple until fully healed, usually around 4–6 weeks.
Until your tattoo has completely healed, you must avoid:
Baths and swimming — risky for your health and the healing process; these increase the risk of introducing germs and bacteria which reside in the water, and encourage pores to open, which can lead to ink loss.
Prolonged sun exposure, sun-beds, fake tans — over-exposing your tattoo to harmful UV rays can hinder healing, bleach the tattoo causing fading, and increase infection risk.
Using gyms, gym equipment and extra-curricular activities — apparatus isn't always clean of bacteria, sweat, and germs from other users, increasing infection risk.
Picking and scratching — seriously affects your skin's ability to repair itself and increases the chance of introducing bacteria, which can result in heavy scarring, ink loss, and infection.
Healthy healing
A new tattoo is a fresh wound — expect a little redness, warmth, swelling and tenderness. Weeping and losing excess ink is normal. After initial healing begins, sunburn-like peeling and flaking is expected, which can feel itchy. Once this stage ends, you'll be left with fresh healed skin and a healed tattoo.
Signs of an infection
Excessive and worsening pain, persistent intense redness and warmth, pus/odour/abnormal discharge, rash or ulcers, fever or temperature.
